What is ingress protection testing?

Ingress Protection Rating is used to evaluate the protection of electrical equipment enclosures against the ingress of solid foreign bodies and liquids. It has been developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) under the standard IEC 60529.

In the Ingress Protection Test, the resistance of the enclosure to penetration of liquids and particles is evaluated. Therefore, according to the achieved resistance to solid particles and liquids, the product is given an IP rating based on IEC 60529 after the test. In addition, the degree of intrusion resistance of the enclosure is verified by means of an intrusion protection test. Exposure of the equipment under test to high pressure, high temperature water jets is one such intrusion protection test.

IPX9K is the highest rating currently available for waterproof protection. While IPX9K testing was originally developed for automotive products, there is now a wide range of applications in the electronics, military and consumer goods industries. The IPX9K test equipment used to perform this test is constantly evolving and improving. Therefore, Ginto Lighting as a leader in the automotive lighting industry, most of our products pass the IPX9K standard test.

Why is it important for vehicle lights to pass the IP Test?

As automotive products, lights are often exposure to outdoor environments where they are subject to splashes, heavy rain or high pressure water and therefore must pass IP testing.

Passing the test means that the product can withstand extreme water pressures and temperatures. It ensures that it can endure harsh environmental conditions and keep functioning without damage to internal components. For this reason, our products must pass the IPX9K waterproof test before reaching the market to ensure their quality and durability.

What are IPX9K testing levels

Level 1: Standard Test

The standard test uses only water and is the least stringent procedure; the entire surface of the product must be exposed for at least three seconds.

Level 2: Standard Test with Detergent

IPx9K Level 2 has the same requirements as the normal test, but with increased temperatures and the addition of a detergent.

Level 3: Harsh Test

The stringent IPx9K Level 3 classification requires 100% exposure of the product to hot water under pressure for a minimum of 3 seconds on each side.

Level 4: Extreme Testing

To test products in harsh conditions, IPx9K Level 4 utilizes high pressure, high temperature steam cleaning.

How to conduct the IPX9K test?

The test simulates cleaning in a car wash or using a pressure washer (lP X9K). First of all, the sample is firmly fixed on a rotating platform and the water temperature is precisely maintained at 80+5 degrees Celsius. secondly, set the water pressure in the 80-100bar range and maintain a spray flow rate of 14-16 liters per minute. Thirdly, repeat the entire test process 10 times at 30 degree angles (0°, 30°, 60°, 90°) each time. Finally, hold each angle for 30 seconds for a total test time of 20 minutes for all angles.
